Iodine

Iodine is a trace mineral in the body essential for one’s thyroid function.  Iodine aids in the conversion of triiodothyronine (T3) into thyroxine (T4).  Under normal circumstances, your body contains approximately 20 to 30 mg of iodine, most of which is stored in your thyroid gland.  A number of reason cause iodine deficiency:

  • Decreased amount of iodine in the diet caused from
    • Consuming overly processed foods
    • Decreased iodine in the soil
  • Decreased amounts of B-complex, C-complex, magnesium, Vitamin E, and selenium essential for the absorption and use of iodine in the body
  • Increased levels of “sister” nutrients
    • Bromide (found in all baked goods, soft drinks, sports drinks, vegetable oils)
    • Fluoride (found in drinking water)

Iodine deficiency causes issues with every aspect of the endocrine, cognitive, mood, and immune roles in the body.  Symptoms of iodine deficiency include

  • Goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland)
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Depression
  • Weight gain

Iodine is essential for proper cell function and must be increased within the diet. Good sources of iodine include:

  • Organic Grass Fed Cow’s Whole Milk Yogurt
  • Organic Grass Fed Cow’s Whole Milk
  • Pasture-Raised Eggs
  • Kelp and other Sea Vegetables
